Among the things I brought with me from England when I came to Canada to work in January 1979 was a receipt from the maternity home where I was born.
I was the fourth child out of five in my family. I was born two weeks earlier than expected and as this receipt shows my mother was at the maternity home in Yeovil, Somerset, England for 16 days after I was born on October 10th 1944.
In those days it seems that women got to rest after giving birth before returning home.
The bill was six pounds fifteen shillings minus the booking fee of ten shillings. In Canadian dollars that would be $12.50. In today's money that would come to $496.50.
That's an amazing deal when you think about it. 16 days’ room and board, and care for my mother and me as well, all for less than the equivalent of $500 today.
My mother must have basked in the luxury of two weeks bed rest after each of us was born.
